Language Arts
Students in the Framingham Public Schools participate in a balanced literacy program which consists of 8 components:
- read aloud
- guided reading
- shared reading
- modeled writing
- shared writing
- guided writing
- independent reading
- independent writing
Students will...
- learn the skills necessary to participate effectively in class discussions, both as presenters and audience.
- learn and use new vocabulary.
- learn the skills to orally share experiences with peers in a small group or whole class setting.
- recognize that authors use capitalization and punctuation to mark a complete sentence.
- know the corresponding sounds of consonants and vowels.
- recognize, name, and print words within lines.
- recognize and print first and last name.
- apply decoding strategies to unfamiliar words.
- identify nouns and verbs.
- enjoy literature and choosing books.
- know that books have titles, authors, and illustrators.
- recognize story elements: characters, setting, plot, problem, and solution.
- use the following comprehension strategies
- Connecting
- Previewing / Prediction
- Questioning
- Imaging
- Summarizing
- Inferring
- read aloud with phrasing and comprehension.
- retell stories heard.
- be exposed to tall tales.
- listen to, recite, and write poetry.
- understand that nonfiction is true and fiction is not true.
- understand text features (headings, table of contents, key words, captions).
- participate in the writing process: generate ideas, write, revise, edit, and publish.
- use correct spelling of 25 high frequency words.
- practice strategies to increase ability to spell correctly in written work.
- generate questions and search for answers to explore/research a topic.
