Mathematics

Students engage in problem solving, communicating, reasoning, and connecting to:

Number Sense and Operations

Students will...

  • name, write, order, and identify place value in whole numbers to 1000 Identify before, after, and between in whole numbers through 1000.
  • identify and represent common fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4) as parts of wholes, parts of groups, and numbers on the number line.
  • compare whole numbers using <, >, and =.
  • identify odd and even numbers.
  • identify, with the appropriate notation, the value of U.S. coins and bills (up to $20 bill).
  • check addition with subtraction.
  • know addition facts (addends to 10) and related subtraction facts.
  • add and subtract 3-digit numbers accurately and efficiently.
  • use an efficient algorithm for addition and subtraction of 2 and 3-digit numbers.
  • estimate, calculate, and solve addition and subtraction problems of 2-digit numbers

Patterns, Relations, and Algebra

Students will...

  • identify, reproduce, describe, extend, and create simple rhythmic, shape, size, number, color, and letter repeating patterns.
  • identify different patterns on the hundreds chart.
  • describe and create story problems using addition and subtraction.
  • skip count by 2’s 5’s, and 10’s up to 50 starting at any number.
  • construct and solve open sentences that have variables.
  • write number sentences using +, -. <, =, and/or > to represent mathematical relationships in everyday situations.
  • describe trading – inclusive of coins and measurement (5 pennies = 1 nickel).

Geometry

Students will...

  • describe attributes of 2 and 3-dimensional shapes by length, corner, edge, face, and sides.
  • identify, describe, and compare 2-dimensional shapes, including polygonal shapes (up to 6 sides) and curved figures.
  • recognize congruent shapes. Identify shapes that have been rotated, reflected, translated, and enlarged.
  • identify symmetry in 2-dimensional shapes.
  • predict the results of putting shapes together and taking them apart.
  • relate geometric ideas to numbers, e.g., seeing rows in an array as a model of repeated addition.

Measurement

Students will...

  • identify parts of day, days of week, months of year, and dates on a calendar.
  • tell time to quarter-hour on analog and digital clocks using a.m. and p.m.
  • compare length, weight, area, and volume of 2 or more objects using direct comparison.
  • measure and compare objects using metric and standard measurement.
  • select and use appropriate measurement tools.
  • use estimates for measurement including time, volume, weight, and area.

Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability

Students will...

  • collect, organize, and describe data.
  • construct, read, and interpret displays of data.
  • draw conclusions and make educated guesses based on information gained from data.
