MISSION
The Translation and Interpretation Team provides effective translation and interpreting services to caregivers and families who may otherwise have difficulty accessing information. The TO’s mission is to provide effective translation and interpreting services to community members whose primary language is not English –or who are hard of hearing, illiterate, or otherwise have difficulty accessing information– in order to ensure access to all aspects of their life in the community. We advocate for language justice and guarantee language access.

SERVICES
We collaborate with schools and departments to offer:

  • Interpreting services (including American Sign Language) for caregivers

    • Consecutive interpreting is interpreting done consecutively (after a speaker has finished talking). Consecutive interpreters listen to what the speaker is saying, and convey the message into another language after the speaker has paused. Recommended for meetings.

    • Simultaneous interpreting is interpreting done simultaneously (at the same time as another speaker). Simultaneous interpreters listen to what the speaker is saying while concurrently saying it in another language. Recommended for events.

  • Written translation services into Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese for caregivers (Other languages, upon approval)

  • Written translation services from other languages into English for staff members

  • Over the Phone Interpreting Services line for staff members

  • Written translation of student curriculum (upon approval by OTL, Sped, H&W, etc.)

  • Video Dubbing and Subtitling

  • Solutions for schools with specific language needs

  • Training on translation protocol, communication with linguistically diverse families.

  • The Translation Office’s primary purpose is supporting communication with families.  We also work with departments to translate district curriculum for our Dual Language and Transitional Bilingual Programs. For services that are for students (e.g. curriculum translation), please request prior approval from the corresponding department or office.

Although the Translation Office vets, recruits, trains, manages, and evaluates FPS approved translators and interpreters, the Department of Special Education funds and manages the translation of IEP documents and IEP meetings. These requests should go directly to the Department of Special Education. You can contact Bernardo Llorente at any time with any questions or problems regarding translation or interpretation of IEP documents or meetings.
