Stapleton 5th Grade Connects Lessons to the Real World

The 5th Grade Teachers at Stapleton Elementary School, with the help and dedication of our STEAM Coach Kris Callahan, were able to enrich our learning in Module 1 of HMH. Students participated in a zoom call with Dawna Callahan, a para athlete who is the CEO/Co-Founder of All in Sport Consulting. All in Sport Consulting provides expertise both in the adapted sport movement and disability inclusion within broader sport conversations. As an organization led by a disabled advocate, athlete, and award-winning adapted sport leader, they offer unmatched expertise to help organizations exceed their goals for creating exceptional inclusive programs, experiences, and environments. Dawna is also an accomplished competitive wheelchair racer who placed 5th in the Boston Marathon in 2010. In Module 1 of HMH, Grade 5 learners answer the essential question "What circumstances push people to create new inventions?" Students read the story "Wheelchair Sports: Hang glider to Wheeler-Dealer where they learn about the improvement and innovation of a wheelchair that is conducive for use in sports. Students were able to learn and ask questions about Dawna's experiences as a para-athlete, her wheel chair, as well as other sports equipment she uses. They were especially amazed by her ski! It was a wonderful, real world connection to our learning.
