All schools meet USDA meal standards under the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act: Final Rule
- All grains served are at a minimum 50% whole grain enriched. At least 80% of the weekly grains offered in the school lunch and breakfast programs
must be whole grain-rich. - Sodium is actively reduced and not offered as an additive. Framingham will follow USDA sodium TARGET 1A.
- Fruits and vegetables are offered at every meal, including dark green, red/orange, beans and peas (legumes), or other vegetable subgroups
- Daily meat or meat alternatives are offered at breakfast and lunch.The final rule establishes a combined grains and meats/meat alternates meal component in the SBP and removes the requirement for schools to offer 1.0 ounce equivalent of grains each day at breakfast. Schools may offer grains, meats/meat alternates, or a combination of both to meet the minimum ounce equivalent in this combined meal component requirement
- All milk served is 1% low-fat, fat-free, or Lactaid. Flavored milk must contain no more than 10 grams of added sugars per 8 fluid ounces, or for flavored milk sold à la carte in middle and high schools, 15 grams of added sugars per 12 fluid ounces
- Meals are designed to meet calorie ranges for specific age groups.
- Zero trans fat in all items served.
The A- List
The A-List is an up-to-date and ever-expanding list of single-serve vending and snack products available through distribution or direct ship from the manufacturer* that meet the Massachusetts Nutrition Standards for Competitive Foods and Beverages in Public Schools and the USDA's Smart Snacks nutritional standards, whichever is stricter.
